I’m 40 years old. I’ve been married to my husband for … (doing the math, gimme a minute)… over 13 years. We waited to have children thinking we could travel, enjoy our hobbies, work full-time, settle into our home. I ran marathons, ultra marathons, even multi-day events. When we were ready to start trying, it only took us two months to conceive our firstborn. I had my son at 38 years old with no trouble conceiving, no problems in the pregnancy or delivery. He will soon be two years old. I love that guy with every cell in my body.
A year ago we started trying to conceive #2. After a few months we visited the doctor and had some tests done. The semen analysis was fine, it’s me that’s the problem. Low Ovarian Reserve, most likely due to age. And the more I read, the more I think that all the running I did sapped my estrogen. When we first visited the fertility clinic we had already done every test they were going to send us to do. The doctor said based on my age and issues that IVF was the way to go, not IUI. He said that IVF will raise my chances of conception back to 12% like normal 40-year-olds trying to conceive.
